January Staff Spotlight

It’s been a while since a staff spotlight has been posted, so we’re making this one extra special.  And we are doing so by introducing Gretchen Reynolds, the Arlington Library’s ICAR and Social Work Liaison Librarian.  Gretchen joined the library in July of 2008 and is the most recent addition to our staff.  But why should we tell you about her when she can answer a set of questions generated by us?

Please welcome Gretchen and take the time to learn a little about her in the questions that follow!

Gretchen Reynolds

1. Who are you and what do you do in the library?
I am a Social Sciences Liaison Librarian and I work with the Institute for Conflict Analysis and Resolution and the Masters Program for Social Work.

2. How do you like working at George Mason?
I love working at George Mason.  My work is interesting and challenging, and I look forward to my job each day.

3. What do you like most about your job?
I enjoy meeting with students to assist them with their research.  The topics that students at the Arlington Campus are working on are fascinating.

4. What do you think is the library’s best feature?
I think our team of talented staff is the best feature.  The teamwork between circulation and reference is great, and I like that everyone is focused on providing good services to our patron community.

5. If you could change one thing about the library, what would it be?
It would be nice if there were windows, but I understand that those are in the works with the new building.

6. Why should students use the library?
The librarians here can help students outline their research work, plan a strategy, locate resources, fill in research gaps, and make sure the citations are correct.  It’s almost a one-stop shop for research success.

7. Why should professors use the library?
We can tailor workshops to the specific needs of their classes.  We can also assist faculty in locating resources for faculty research.  Something else that is important is communication with faculty for buying new books and other materials.  The librarians look forward to suggestions, comments, and feedback about the collections and our services.

8. What do you like to do when you’re not working?
Usually when I am not working, I am spending time with my daughter and my husband.  But in terms of hobbies and interests, I like to travel and visit friends around the world.  I also like cooking, outdoor projects, and learning new things.  If I had time, I would really like to learn how to fix cars.

9. Do you have a favorite website?
I don’t have a single favorite website.  There are too many great sites out there.  There are a few news websites that I check each day, and a couple of blogs, but nothing that I would say is my favorite.
